Gibson Les Paul – Correct Way of Re-Stringing the Les Paul

The following are the basic steps on how to restring your Gibson Les Paul guitar:

Step 1: For the first step, you need to unwind the guitar’s tuning pegs to free as much tension as possible. Step 2: After detuning it, its strings should already be loose by now. Using a wire cutter or nosed pliers cut the strings located near the guitar’s headstock. Step 3: Remove the remaining strings from its tuning pegs on the head. Step 4: Then remove the strings that are still on its tail. Step 5: After removing all the strings, start cleaning its fret board. This part also offers you a good chance to polish your guitar. If you want to reduce or increase the action of your guitar, you can do this by adjusting the height of the strings.

Step 6: If you want to reduce or increase the tail or bridge of your Gibson Les Paul guitar, you just simply turn its ‘wheels’. This step is not really compulsory, but if you want to adjust the sound of its tail/bridge, this is the perfect time to do it. Step 7: Your next step is to re-string all its new strings in their respective pegs, but don’t tune your guitar yet. Step 8: One convenient way of working your thick (low) string is by sliding it through a peg hole. Then, bend the string 90 degrees in opposite direction, and slowly start turning its peg to build tension on its strings. Step 9: Perform the same step (step 8) for your thin (high) strings. To ensure the security of each strings; you can optionally run the strings through the peg twice. Step 10: Finally, all that’s left to do is to tune your Gibson Les Paul and take your wire cutter or pliers and cutoff the extra strings that are left hanging on your tuning pegs.
